PRINCE Charles will be absent from Friday's wedding of his cousin, Viscount Linley.

He cited "unbreakable previous engagements" for not going, but palace-watchers suggested yesterday that Prince Charles had deliberately absented himself on a State visit to Turkey to avoid his estranged wife, Princess Diana.

Viscount Linley, the son of Princess Margaret and photographer Lord Snowdon, is to marry $240 million property heiress Serena Stanhope in the presence of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, the 93-year-old Queen Mother and the Duke and Duchess of York.

Celebrities among the 650 guests will include Elton John, Mick Jagger and his wife Jerry Hall.

A reception in the throne room at St James's Palace will be followed by a party at an Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge.
